How you take it: One small tablet once a day, with or without food. You keep taking your usual blood pressure pill as well.

Before your first dose

A blood test of your liver.
A pregnancy test, if you could become pregnant, and a plan for birth control that starts before your first dose.
Your kidney doctor's office sends a start form to Novartis Patient Support, the drugmaker's support program.
Your insurance approves the medicine. Novartis may supply it free while a private plan decides.
A specialty pharmacy, CareMed or Biologics, calls to set up monthly delivery. Answer calls from numbers you do not know.

Answer calls from the specialty pharmacy. A missed call can delay your delivery.

Call your nephrologist right away about

Nausea or vomiting, pain in the upper right belly, unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fever or itching; or a late period or any chance you are pregnant.

Also tell your care team about

Swelling of the ankles or legs, unusual weight gain or trouble breathing
Unprotected sex or a birth control failure, so emergency birth control can be discussed
Any new medicine, including rifampin or cyclosporine, before you start it
